Another day, another misinterpreted data point sending social media into a tailspin. This time it’s a graphic claiming the U.S. has just 41 days of oil left (though depending on where you look, it’s 40, or 43). Part of the alarm is fed by the incorrect belief that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is about to be completely drained (it isn’t), and part of it traces back to trade talks with Canada that some fear could choke off the flow of Canadian oil into the U.S. But there’s no oil apocalypse on the horizon. And we’ve watched this exact metric spark panic before.

Rewind to 2022, when Tucker Carlson infamously declared that the U.S. would run out of diesel by Thanksgiving, warning that “thanks to the Biden administration’s religious war, this country is about to run out of diesel fuel.” It never happened. And it never happened because the metric everyone is passing around isn’t a hard expiration date for oil, diesel, or gasoline. It’s a rough gauge that analysts glance at, one that shifts slightly from week to week.

The math behind it is simple. Take current supply (inventories, production, or a blend of the two) and divide by a rate of consumption (demand, refinery inputs, or something similar). The result is a number of “days.” Where the average American reads that number and thinks “we’re about to run out,” an analyst reads the same figure next to the small change since last week.

Analysts can reasonably disagree on the inputs: which supply figure to use, whether to divide by implied demand or refinery inputs. For my own calculation, I took total U.S. oil inventories, including the SPR, and divided by refinery inputs, since no one actually burns a barrel of crude. All of it heads to refineries to become the products we rely on: diesel, jet fuel, gasoline, and more. By that measure, we’re sitting at 87.8 days as of the week ending August 14. Fresh data lands Wednesday (the Energy Information Administration updates its figures every week, so the number always drifts a bit). But don’t circle a doomsday date on your calendar. It’s a loose ~88 days out, and it keeps sliding forward with the calendar.

Of course, it’s already too late. Social media “experts” have shared the doom and gloom, and it’s spreading like wildfire, for the same reason Carlson’s 2022 tweet pulled far more views than any measured take on the actual challenges ever could. The pragmatic explanation just doesn’t go viral.

So the next time you see an alarming data point or an apocalyptic post about oil, ask someone who actually studies it what the number means. We’re losing that instinct to clicks and revenue-sharing payouts. Everyone wants to share and cash in, and we’re all a little poorer for the lost perspective.

The bottom line: we’re not running out of oil anytime soon. Could conditions get tighter? Sure. Real supply risks exist, from the Canada talks to a Strait of Hormuz that isn’t flowing freely, and the longer any of them drag on, the more strain on the system. But markets are adaptive, and they’re working overtime to keep refineries supplied so you still have diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel. Prices may run elevated. Running dry is a different story, and it’s simply not on the table.
